Onix Sports' co-founder Steve Wong discusses paddles at the USA Pickleball Associations' 2012 National Tournament.
Here's a transcript of Steve's interview:
David: Weíre here with Steve Wong of S-Type Sports (Onix Sports) and Steve, Congratulations on all the medals this year at USAPA Tournaments and we wanted to talk to you first of all about what you tell beginners to look for in a paddle.
Steve: I tell the beginners to look for finding the right weight that suits their needs, um, making sure that it feels good for them, the grip size, making sure that itís not too big if their hands are small, and just something that feels comfortable to them, um, really the users, the playerís really going to know whatís best for them, so finding what meets your needs.
David: Ok, great, and can you talk a little bit about the difference between fiberglass and graphite paddles?
Steve: Yeah, graphite paddles traditionally are a little lighter in weight, uh, composite paddles have more pop to the ball, um, more power; itís really good for singles. I tend to use a graphite paddle for all of my doubles play; it seems to give me a little bit more spin and control with the shots.
David: Ok, great, and can you tell us a little about the difference in weights in paddles, what causes that, (a)n(d)Ö
Steve: Our paddles are made to spec., so we give our manufacturer our specifications and theyíre within like .4 of an ounce usually within each model, so look for whatís good for you. I use a graphite Stryker and I also use a Graphite Z5 at times, depending on what Iím playing with, um, and which kind of tournament it is. But, those are my preferences, um, really, yeah, itís whatever you like.
David: Great, And, finally, um, tell us why our customers should buy S-Type paddles.
Steve: Well, my name is Steve Wong and Iím the president of the company. Iíve developed the company and weíve been around for 9 years. Iíve developed each one of the paddles weíve tested thoroughly. I love pickleball. Iím an Ambassador for the sport. Iím a 3-time Gold medalist in this tournament, and uh also a Silver medalist. Iíve built it to meet the playersí needs and the players really like the different options they have with the grips, and also the different weights. And this is a Wide-Body paddle so a lot of people like the Z5 line.
David: Great Steve. We appreciate your, uh, answers and, uh, our customers love the S-Type Sports Paddles, so thanks for your time.
