Who is Six Zero?

We’ve seen hundreds of new paddle brands emerge in the last 2 years, and it’s become increasingly difficult to really stand out amongst the crowd. Australian engineer Dale Young and his team at Six Zero were up to the challenge, and they have taken the market by storm.

Their gem inspired lineup features some of the latest tech including thermoformed construction, raw carbon fiber, Kevlar, and the increasingly popular “hybrid” shape which they led the charge for.

The Magic of the Hybrid Shape

Six Zero Hybrid Shape

While they are releasing more shapes in the future, the now patented “Aerodynamically Engineered Flared Hybrid Design” is part of the brand’s bread and butter that gives players an easy choice when deciding between elongated and standard shaped paddles. While splitting the difference between 16 and 16.5 inches seems tiny, the balance of reach and forgiveness is something we felt for ourselves in our extensive playtests.

Double Black Diamond Control Paddle

As the flagship paddle that really put Six Zero on the map, the Double Black Diamond Control is considered by many to be the “Ultimate All-Court Paddle”. Featuring exceptionally high-quality Japanese Toray T700 carbon fiber and well-executed thermoformed construction, the team at Six Zero created a real “gem” with the DBD. Other paddles in its class (like the Joola Perseus or CRBN X series) have significantly more power out of the box, so players looking for the benefits of thermoformed raw carbon fiber construction with more control should consider the Double Black Diamond.

Should I choose the 14mm or 16mm Double Black Diamond?

The age-old debate of thinner vs. thicker when choosing a pickleball paddle has changed over the years with notable exceptions, but we found the rule to ring true for the Double Black Diamond. The 16mm was a more stable paddle on off center hits with a higher twistweight that gave us the feeling of a larger sweet spot. Players looking for max forgiveness and consistency should go with the 16.

The 14mm cut through the air like butter and made bending the ball on drives, serves, and speed-ups a blast, but we did lose some of the forgiveness in comparison to the 16mm. Offensive players capable of hitting the sweet spot consistently should consider the 14mm option, but we would recommend that they stay open to using weighted tape to enhance the stability of the paddle if they find it too unforgiving.

Should I choose the Black Diamond Power or the Double Black Diamond Control?

Players who are looking for an all-court paddle that is easy to transition to and can play a well-rounded game with out-of-the-box should choose the Double Black Diamond. Most players will benefit from the forgiveness it offers without feeling the need for more power. Players coming from or looking for a power paddle that are capable of reigning in the heat will love the pop offered by the Black Diamond, as it will let them put the most pressure on their opponents.

Black Diamond Power Paddle

While similar in name to the Double Black Diamond, the Black Diamond has a very different personality. What differentiates the Black Diamond is the inclusion of Fiberglass in the face material along with Carbon Fiber which Six Zero calls their “Toray Raw Fiberglass face”. The inclusion of springy fiberglass really trampolines the ball of the face and gives the Black Diamond the personality of a true power paddle.

What is different About The JMV Pro Edition of the black diamond?

Professional players have been customizing their paddles to their preferred spec for years, but for many amateurs, it’s hard to know where to start even if adding weight to their paddle would benefit their game. Recognizing this, the team at Six Zero released a special JMV (Jaume Martinez-Vich) model of their Black Diamond to let regular players feel what it’s like to play a true pro paddle.

Should I choose the standard Black Diamond or the Pro model?

The JMV pro Black Diamond is heavier than the stock model and should be considered for singles specialists, 4.0+ players, or players coming from tennis. Other players should go with the standard Black Diamond and can always add weight to their paddle later if needed.

Infinity Series Edgeless Paddles

The infinity series features an “edgeless” version of both the Black Diamond and Double Black Diamond, but there’s more to these paddles than the removal of the edgeguard. Dale and the team at Six Zero set out to optimize edgeless construction by featuring carefully considered carbon fiber orientations on the edge to create a frame that lets the paddle flex and stay rigid in the right areas. If that sounds like Greek to you, know that these are some of the best engineered edgeless paddles on the market.

Should I choose a regular Double Black Diamond/Black Diamond or one of the Infinity models?

The traditional Double Black Diamond and Black Diamond models have more perimeter weighting out of the box thanks to their external edgeguard. The wrap around guard makes them slightly slower to swing, but it offers more forgiveness on off-center hits (unless of course you contact the edgeguard itself). If you want a high-level performance paddle out of the box and can handle a slightly heavier paddle, the traditional models are right for you.

The Infinity Double Black Diamond and Black Diamond paddles feature meticulously designed and layered carbon fiber around the perimeter creating two of the highest performing edgeless paddles in the game. The lack of an external edgeguard does makes the paddle quicker through the air and eliminates those pesky mishits off of the edgeguard, but players who are used to more weight on the perimeter will need to add it post-purchase to get their preferred balance. Players looking for the highest quality construction, value maneuverability highly, or have no issue customizing their paddle should consider the Infinity models.

Should I choose the Infinity Black Diamond or the Infinity Double Black Diamond?

Like the selection between the traditional Black Diamond and Double Black Diamond, players who need more forgiveness and are developing their game will play the best with and should choose the Infinity Double Black Diamond. Players confident in their ability to control the ball looking for tons of put-away power should choose the Infinity Black Diamond.

Ruby Kevlar Pickleball Paddle

The much-anticipated launch of the Six Zero Ruby was met with thunderous approval and appreciation for its long-lasting elite spin production potential. Six Zero was the first company to offer a 100% aramid fiber face material by using Kevlar sourced from DuPont (yes, the same company that makes the material in bulletproof vests).

The Ruby offers slightly less “pop” off the face than the Double Black Diamond creating a plusher feeling on contact making it a great choice for those looking for predictable power levels. The Kevlar surface should retain its spin potential longer than the raw carbon fiber surface of the Double Black Diamond, but we have not been able to test that in the field. The only knock we had on the Ruby was its slightly higher static weight than some of our playtesters preferred. Kevlar is a heavier material than carbon fiber, so players sensitive to higher weights should be aware of the weight disparity between the two paddles.

Why is the Six Zero Ruby so popular?

Kevlar is an incredibly strong material capable of withstanding impact and heat better than almost any other material on the market which in turn makes it incredibly difficult to work with. Other companies have explored and successfully launched Kevlar AND Carbon Fiber blended paddle faces, but Six Zero spent 10 months designing and developing the Ruby and had to figure out a solution to working with the finnicky material. The result of their research was an incredibly balanced all-court paddle with elite spin potential that lasts while retaining the shape and benefits of the rest of the Six Zero lineup.

Should I choose the Six Zero Ruby or the Double Black Diamond?

Players looking for a high-performance all-court paddle that value a crisp feeling off the face, faster hand speed, and balanced performance in every category will love the Double Black Diamond (it also comes in a bit less expensive).

Players wanting the latest in spin technology that prefer a more plush feeling on contact should choose the Ruby as long as they are capable of producing some of their own power and wielding the slightly higher weight.
